The Silva Forest Foundation's Protected Landscape Area Proposal

Silva Protected Landscape mapThis plan shows the outlines of what the Silva Forest Foundation proposed as a template for our forestry activities in the Arrow Creek watershed. The most important objective we have is the preservation of water quality in Arrow Creek. We think the plan allows for this, and also ensures protection from degradation of the scenery, the ecology, the wildlife, and the land itself.

The outstanding feature is the core reserve along Arrow Creek and its principal tributaries (in yellow), with corridors extending to the borders of our operation.

The areas in aqua represent land of potential use for forestry. Within this area are smaller areas not clearly shown on the map because of problems of scale, which include geologically and hydrologically unstable places, and nodes of special ecological interest scattered throughout the length of our operating base

The crosshatched area at the headwaters where the river forks represent the caribou reserve. This is an area also of special interest to the Ktunaxa-Kinbasket band -- one of our shareholders. Silva has designated and area along the East Fork (shown on the map in light blue) as excluding forestry that is partially coextensive.

If special areas are excluded from our use, we are left with about 40% left to us for logging.

We are committed to using the plan as a basis of what we do, though some areas we think on reexamination may be found suitable for the sensitive kind of logging that is our trademark

It is also our view that we should seek area-based tenure, and negotiate for some of the land scheduled for reallocation by the BC Government to expand our timber base.
